Being an altar server is an honor, a privilege, and most importantly a calling. The ministry of altar serving is open to boys and girls 3rd grade and up. In reference to altar servers, as Pope John Paul II noted on August 12, 2001 at a gathering of more than 2,000 altar servers, “...you are much more than simple ‘helpers of the parish priest.’ Above all, you are servers of Jesus Christ, of the eternal High Priest. Thus, you, altar servers, are called in particular to be young friends of Jesus.”
What a gift and a calling it is to be an altar server! An altar server serves Jesus at the altar by assisting the priest and/or deacon at Masses and special liturgies such as First Holy Communions, Confirmations, and those liturgies that take place during Holy Week. Altar servers perform their ministry so our worship at liturgy can be more prayerful and meaningful. They learn more about the liturgy, and fall in love with it, by becoming part of it.
Recruitment is ongoing and anyone interested in serving as an altar server should contact the Rectory Office at 631-473-0165.
Commitment: Altar servers generally serve 1 to 3 hours per month. They commit to serving with reverence for the one they ultimately serve is Our Lord.
